Fun day in Boston

Both kids had a blast -- it's a fantastic museum, with tons to do, even for Sophia. They have a little play area just for crawling babies, with lots of neat toys, weird surfaces to crawl on, etc. She loves it. Stephen does just about everything else -- take a look at their website for the exhibits. He especially likes the trains in the Playspace, and the boat/water play area. Usually David takes him around the museum while I play with Sophie in the baby pit, and then we switch.
We drove into the city on our usual route -- 95S to 93S, got off at exit 26 for Lechmere station and parking. (Lechmere is the last stop on the green line, and parking is $3 for the whole day -- a steal!) They're doing construction on the Green line after Haymarket, so there's a shuttle bus from Lechemere to Haymarket/Govt' Center. From Government Center, we take the T to Park Street, and then to South Station -- that's where the real trains come in. Sometime, I want to take the train down and go to the CM from there. We were all hungry by the time we got to South Station, so Stephen had a burger, I got red beans and rice to share with Sophie (she likes beans! and rice!), and DH got, of all things, cheese fries. South Station has a really cool food court :)
From South Station it's about a 15 minute walk to the Children's Museum. We then spent about 2 hours at the museum, where I took far too many pictures of Sophia and Stephen playing. (I have about 300 to name and organize... hopefully I'll get them onto the site this week. Why oh why do I let them pile up like this? Argh.) Both kids had their usual ton of fun; Sophie got to play with a few more babies, and Stephen played with other kids.
After the museum, we walked to Chinatown, since it seemed silly to take the T from South Station to Chinatown (one whole stop). It took about 25 minutes to walk. Stephen was in excellent spirits, and did a great job keeping up. In Chinatown, we ate at our usual place -- "The Peach Farm," which, despite its name, specializes in seafood. We always get salty spicy dry fried squid -- the best anywhere -- and this time, also had chicken lo mein, and chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, and (Stephen's fav) rice. Sophie also likes rice, chicken, and noodles, but she was so tired from the rest of the day, she was awfully cranky. She also tends not to nurse when we're out; I'd tried to get her to nurse a couple of times in the museum, but she's so distractable, she only had about 5 minutes' worth. So by the time we were in the restaurant (3 pm), I was pretty fit to burst -- I actually had to go into the bathroom to hand-express into a tea cup! She drank the 2 ounces I expressed, anyway, with not-insignificant spillage down her front :P
From Chinatown, it was down to the T (Stephen's favorite part of Boston). We went from Chinatown to Downtown Crossing, then walked through a maze of corridors to get to Government Center -- about 15 more minutes of walking, I think. Gov't Center shuttle took us to back to Lechmere, and from Lechmere, to our other main Boston stop: Trader Joe's, where both kids got balloons and we stocked up on healthy junk food. I wish they'd put a location closer to us! After TJs, we decided cannoli were in order, so drove into the North End, where they were having some kind of festival -- totally parked up. I jumped out and waded through people into Mike's Pastry, where the best cannoli are bred. Mmmmm. Then we got a little bit lost (first time in ages, actually!) because SOMEONE decided to turn right instead of going straight, but that was okay -- 93N is pretty well-signed, so we made it out.
When we got home, I pumped 5 oz... must remember to bring the pump with us next time, as the drive home was pretty painful. I wish Sophie would nurse better when we're out. I hope this doesn't indicate she'll want to self-wean early. I'd like to go at least 2 years with her, but if she wants to stop sooner, I wouldn't make her nurse. Maybe I'll just try to pump for her if she does. I don't really want to give her cow's milk or soymilk, and there are few choices besides those. Tangential, anyway.
So we had another fun day. Probably will do it again next week, or the week after. And it's possible that David will be sent to Goddard Space Flight Center for some testing on the thing his group is working on, in which case we'll all drive down, and the kids and I will have a week or so to explore Washington DC! That's far from settled, though; his co-workers are all insane, and often the two main team leaders are not on speaking terms. Not only does the right hand not know what the left is doing, the left is trying to amputate the entire right arm, even though the body is right-handed. Sigh. But that's another rant.

Date: 2004-08-08 09:57 pm (UTC)Good luck with getting sent to Washington, but sorry about the work stuff. My DH has just got out of a really miserable mobbing situation, and it seems like incompetent managements are just about everywhere :-/ Our lawyer just sighed and moaned about mismanagement lawsuits, and the people who started the company that's going to provide our eggs and bacon soonish (i.e. that
