New England Holocaust Memorial
Nov. 22nd, 2004 03:58 pmForgot to mention yesterday that we also visited the Holocaust Memorial in Boston. It's pretty stark, just 6 glass towers. The towers are etched with 6 million numbers (which were presumably those tattooed on the victims), and along the path are quotes from survivors and facts about what happened. I was pretty much okay (besides sad) until we got to the last one, where the fact was "MOST INFANTS AND CHILDREN WERE KILLED immediately upon arrival at the camps. The Nazis murdered as many as one and a half million Jewish children." I had Sophie in the sling, and just held her tight. I mean, it's something that you sort of "know", because they wouldn't have put babies and little kids in the work camps, but something that I at least hadn't really thought about. But there it was, carved in granite. I don't know if I feel worse for the children -- who, at least, didn't know what was going on -- or their parents. It makes me cry just to think of what they must have gone through.
Anyway, that's one of the reasons I hate terms like "boob Nazi" or "feminazi" -- they really trivialize a horrendous part of history.
On a lighter note, I got still more done around the house yesterday, after posting. Cleaned out my closet -- lots of shirts to Goodwill, as well as some kids' clothes. Now I need to do the upstairs. Gack.
