Today's his birthday. He asked me not to make a big deal of it, so I didn't; I made him a cheesecake and "frosted" it with more yogurt cheese (with a little sugar). Bought a few books (which, alas, haven't yet arrived), and have a couple of other things for after the kids are in bed :) But, being the sweetie he is, he bought stuff for us! He said he thought about what he wanted for his birthday, and decided he wanted to give things to us, the big old hobbit. He got each of the kids an age-appropriate scooter (a Hot Wheels one for Stephen, which he adores, and a three-wheeled one for Sophia, which she loves because it's like Stephen's), and me a label maker (which doesn't sound romantic, but it's fun and I've been eyeing them for a long time). Tomorrow I'll be in a meeting for a while, so he's taking the kids out scooting :) And I am labeling everything in sight.

Not much else going on. "Day out with Thomas" on Saturday, which should be a barrel of... something. Lots of work. School starts in a week (!!!) -- Stephen will be in first grade! I never thought I'd be one of those "I can't wait until school starts" moms, but he really needs more structure and activity than I am able to give him here, at least if I am to continue working. He's seriously bored right now at home. Plus Sophia is really assertive right now, and that leads to a lot of squabbling, which drives me bonkers faster than anything else they do (except maybe the incessant whining). I have hopes that they will both appreciate each other more when he's gone from 8-3. I'm not complaining, though -- they really are wonderful kids most of the time. It's just the fighting that gets me. Now I totally understand where my mother was coming from ;)
