Chinese new year in Boston!
Feb. 14th, 2005 12:28 pmWe had a wonderful time in Boston yesterday. We caravanned down with
brunahildm and
bjudemurphy and then met David's parents at Lechmere. Took the bus to Haymarket, T'd to Downtown Crossing... and then David and his parents took the kids for the short T ride to South Station: they were going to the Children's museum, while Robyn, Brian, and I were going to Chinatown. Strange feeling that was, separating from the children on the T; of course I've left them before, but they've always been in a nest -- either our house or David's parents'. It felt almost like a physical blow to watch them get off the train while I stayed on -- a feeling I watched with abstraction, though it actually did make me cry out "Oh!" Very strange.
R & B and I got off at Chinatown, and I ran up the stairs rather than wait for the escalator -- still feeling a bit of adrenaline from the separation, I think? As soon as we were in the open air, we could hear the festivities in Chinatown. Drums, cymbals, and firecrackers! I had looked all over the web for a specific time for the parade, but couldn't find anything, and as we entered Chinatown proper, it became clear why that was. There was no set parade; rather, dozens of martial arts schools and cultural organizations each had their own little cadre of lion dancers, drums, and other instruments. We wandered around as Robyn took pictures for about an hour, maybe 90 minutes. I took a few myself:

After leaving Chinatown by T and bus, we made our regular stop at Trader Joe's, then drove home, gave the kids a bath (which Sophie hated -- guess it's been too long since the last time she had a bath rather than a shower!), and off to bed. Very tired. Still sore today from the walking and fabric schlepping. But it was great fun, and we'll certainly go down again next year.
