Happy birthday to me

I'm 32 today. Kind of a boring birthday. Doesn't have much going for it, besides being 2^5. We went to Boston -- MOS, Chinatown for lunch, Target, Trader Joe's. Stephen was cranky, Sophie was restless, still had fun. Stephen was distraught for a while because he didn't have a present for me, and you *have* to have presents on your birthday, but I think I eventually got across to him that it's different when you're a grown-up, and all I really wanted was a hug and kiss.

Now I'm just sleepy. Not looking forward to the stupid-hot weather tomorrow. Must put in the ACs. Glad we live here and not further south, but even so, it shouldn't get to be 96 degrees F in New Hampshire. That's just not right.

It doesn't often get that hot here (though we've had it in the high 20s Celsius in the last few days). But the problem in this country is that we're not well prepared for it. So, for instance, air-conditioning in homes is highly unusual, and isn't even universal elsewhere. We have the same problem with the winter, as well: a moderate snowfall can quite easily bring things grinding to a halt.

I'm sitting here in my study with all the windows open, turfing the cats off my lap, because it's just too hot to have them there.
